Storax

Storax (Styraxliquidus), franz. Storaxliquide, ist der von Liquidambar orientalis Miller im südwestlichen Kleinasien gewonnene Balsam.

Aus den vorher durch Einschnitte verletzten Partien des Baumstammes werden Rinden- und Holzstücke ausgehackt und daraus mit warmem Wasser der Balsam ausgeschmolzen; er ist ein pathologisches Produkt [1]. Roher Storax ist wasserhaltig, grau, klebrig, dickflüssig und allmählich durch Verdunsten des Wassers und Absetzen der Verunreinigungen klar, dunkelbraun, riecht sehr angenehm eigentümlich, schmeckt kratzend aromatisch, ist völlig löslich in Aether, Alkohol, Aceton, größtenteils in Benzol und Chloroform, besitzt das spez. Gew. 1,112–1,115 und besteht aus Styrol (C8H8), Vanillin, freier Zimtsäure und verschiedenen Eltern [2]. Vor der Anwendung wird es gewöhnlich durch Lösung und Filtration gereinigt. Seine Verwendung als Räuchermittel, als Bestandteil von solchen, wie von Räucheressenzen, -kerzen, -pulvern, als Heilmittel gegen Krätze und in der mikroskopischen Technik ist sehr umfangreich [3]. Die als Preßrückstand sich ergebende Rinde wird als Cortex Thymiamatis, gemeiner, roter oder fester Storax (Styrax) ebenfalls als Räuchermittel verwendet.
