Proportion, eine Gleichung, bei der auf beiden Seiten ein Verhältnis steht, z.B. a : b = c : d. Hieraus folgt a d = b c und durch Auflösung a = b c/d. a und d heißen äußere, b und c innere Glieder der Proportion.

Man darf die inneren, ebenso auch die äußeren Glieder der Proportion vertauschen. Vertauscht man die linksstehenden, so muß man auch die rechtsstehenden vertauschen. Der Hauptumformungssatz für Proportionen lautet: Ist a : b = c : d, so ist auch:

m a + n b : p a + q b = m c + n d : p c + q d, speziell a + b : a – b = c + d : c – d

(korrespondierende Addition und Subtraktion). Eine Proportion heißt stetig, wenn die inneren Glieder gleich sind, z.B. a : b = b : c. Sind mehrere Quotienten einander gleich, so entsteht eine fortlaufende Proportion: a : b : c : d : ... = a' : b' : c' : d' : ...
