Argon, chemisches Element A, Atomgewicht 40, von Raleigh und Ramsay als Begleiter des Stickstoffs in der Luft 1894 entdeckt.

Farb- und geruchloses Gas; spez. Gew. 19,957 (H = 1). Mit kochendem Sauerstoff abgekühlt und unter 50,6 Atm. Druck flüssig werdend, bei –186,9° siedend, bei – 189,6° fest. Bemerkenswert ist, daß die Herstellung chemischer Verbindungen aus Argon bis jetzt nicht gelungen ist. Außer in der Atmosphäre wurde Argon gelöst in einigen Mineralwässern gefunden; einige seltene Mineralien geben beim Erhitzen Argon ab.
